April Fishing Report
March brought us daylight savings time , the vernal equinox and red hot sail fishing . Wahoo action was still going strong in the Bahamas and sword fishing was productive in the daytime and after dark . As the third month ebbed many local anglers were trekking to Bimini in search of yellowtail . Fuel prices kept escalating but area fishermen still went out and did their thing . A sign of things to come might be the great number of local sportsmen fishing from kayaks . Burns no gas , increases endurance and muscle and produces a mixed bag of inshore fish .
April hits the ground running with the granddaddy of all tournaments , The Miami Billfish Tournament scheduled for the first week of the month .
The Florida Billfish Masters Tournament , a Danny Kipnis production , turned out to be a thriller with the outcome in doubt until LINES IN was called . The event was won by the Owl’s Nest with Captain Matty Tambor at the helm and veteran mate and med student Aron Nusbaum in the pit .The Owl’s Nest had 14 fish and was tied by Ray Rosher and crew on his new ride the Miss Costa a state of the art Viking owned by HMY Yachts. Tambor and company took the title on time . The fish Tales skippered by the famous captain “Zigger “ [ Chris Zelinski formerly of Marblehead Mass. ] known for his preparation and his attention to detail took the third spot . Zig man had Coco Paleologos in the pit looking for sails and sniffing for tuna. Warren Sands Wound Up added muscular Captain Glen Clyatt [ Mr. Ocean Reef ] to the team for this event but alas the tournament was off Miami and they were not in the money .

Miami entrepreneur George Foti , the man with the Midas touch , a former local master angler went down to Ecuador and fished the Galapagos Islands with international legend Captain Alan Star [ formerly of the defunct Nantucket Light Ship ]on his new boat . George an ex- Tarheel footballer fishing with his trusty fly rod went three for five on stripped marlin .
Eleven year old “Doc “ Sands fishing from the dock behind dad Warren’s Wound Up caught a twelve pound snook on his spinning rod while envious brother Curtis looked on . The lads are students at the Westminster School and might even emulate their mother a well known educator or granddad and someday attend the London School of Economics or an equally prestigious citadel of learning. Until then they will have to settle for successful fishing careers .
A.J Sepe the world’s youngest charter boat captain took a breather from his successful sword fishing operation and went fun fishing . A.J and the ubiquitous Ryan Edelstein captured a 48 pound king fish and a host of edible species .
Al Schaefer of Herb Rosell’s South Fishing Operation sent us this picture of a 1209 pound blue marlin caught off Mauritius . The giant fish was captured by Richard Wooding a native of the island. He was fishing with a hundred and thirty pound line and battled the beast for one hour and twenty minute battle .
Detroit city’s Big Don Banes and Captain Bart Sherwood took the Clueless to Big Major Spot Island in the Bahamas after an arduous and successful fishing campaign in the Dominican Republic . It proved to be a fine place for a little R&R on the way home to Miami . The restful island which is neither big nor major is the site of a pristine beach and known for the wild pigs which inhabit the area . Big Don and his daughters went to the beach and were feeding the friendly porkers and were soon having an idyll with animals petting them , swimming with them and all were happily frolicking under the tropic sun . A lady came out of the Clueless and started screaming at the happy swimmers . She wanted those filthy pigs away from the boat and began to hurl insults at the pigs calling them everything but swine .One pig stopped playing with girls and swam towards the boat leaped into the cockpit and nipped the unhappy lady on the arm jumped back into the water and continued playing with his new friends . Barnes , Captain Bill Harrison and the girls broke up. When the big man finally stopped laughing he jokingly told the unfortunate lady , “ those pigs might have rabies , it’s a slow death”. The chagrined lady finding no solace from those around her called to the captain of the next boat and asked what he thought of the incident . “ Them pigs are a lot smarter then you think,” he answered . It was a hilarious and unforgettable moment for almost everyone .
When the Clueless returned to Miami Don and Bart switched to the Fighting Lady and went down to Islamorada where the big guy caught and released a great white shark over twenty feet long and estimated to be in the two thousand pound range .

Popular Captain David Smyth of the Rhode Island Smyths and his lovely wife Sherry proudly announced the birth of their beautiful daughter Summer Bryn Smyth . The little charmer was named Summer as she will be gifted with a warm heart and a sunny disposition if genes have anything to do it with it . David is captain of the Ruckus and an investor . He once was second in command of the second largest navy in the western hemisphere .Welcome to the planet little Summer I’m sure you will grow up to be a gal for all seasons . You’re a smart little lady Summer Bryn you wisely chose great parents .
Captain Bill Harrison reports that his friend Ross “Flash “ Clark is having a banner year at Rum Cay . Flash’s employer Dave Cummings opined that the fishing was the best he’s seen in his twelve year stint on the Cay. They fill the fish box daily with dolphin and yellow fin tuna. Flash caught his buddy Buzz Gardner a 48 pound dolphin and a yellow fin tuna which tipped the scales at 76 pounds . Clark and Cummings took a busman’s holiday and captured a blue marlin , Flash’s first in ten years . He had been fishing in areas where there were black and stripped marlin and captured more than his share .
Rum Cay , the Relentless and Captain Flash are featured on the Outdoor Channel’s World Class Sport Fishing show being aired over the last two months .
Luis Isiais , the Ecuadorian sportsman and local tournament champion , hosted the gala of the year for his fiancée the lovely model Alexandra Barbara to announce their engagement. Luis and his betrothed invited the crème de la crème of local society . Such notables as truck magnate Joe Di Maria , Hannibal Moyo and Jack Agramonte feasted on Kobe beef [ I think Kobe Bryant owns the company ] washed down with Johnnie Walker Blue Label and vintage champagne . It was a festive event enjoyed by all ,especially socialite captain Rick Lindner who had a hot time .
Captain John Louie Dudas ,captain of Warren Sand’s Wound Up, has won the In The Bite Magazine 2007 captain of the year award .Captain Dudas was regarded as the new Buddy Carey when he ran the charter boat L&H on Crandon Park Marina and then went on to a super successful tournament career on the Freedom and with the Sands team . Big John will receive the award Saturday May 3rd at Miami’s venerable Rod & Reel Club .
That’s it for this month fans .
As usual I close with the quote of the month :
I close with a vintage piece of wisdom by Captain Kell Williamson which is appropriate for this time of year . “ The only fishing is bluefin tuna fishing at Cat Cay , that’s the big leagues “.
